Languages as Images Workshop
As part of ‘Open Art Spaces’ welcome to a workshop on the relation between Writing and Drawing. A voyage into the hi-stories of dots and plots, linear dialogues, figurative speech, marking, mapping, weaving, sense and value, thread and trace. We will attempt to go right there: to the edge between the verbal and the visual.
Both words and drawings, with their signs and meanings, are necessary to space and charge reality. They are both vehicles and mediums to unite and conceive reality, working between the ‘I’ and the world, the interior and the exterior, the knowing and the doing. They allow a transmission for us not to be subdued by the world, rather interact with it into always new narratives.
Yet Writing and Drawing are not the same, that would be pure duplication. So how do they differ? What are they not? And where do they cross their ‘Otherness’?
Age: +12 year old
Date: Sunday 10th October 2021 @ 14:00 -16:00 H
Aims: This workshop aims to develop verbal as well as visual literacy. As in a Laboratory participants explore their imagination and visualisation via a ‘writing in the air’ exercise, attention to gesture & intentions. By Colouring words we create visual abstractions and by colouring the same words at different times, we experience change as a key signifier in perception. We will then create drawings from text.
Materials, Resources and Expenses: provided A3 Paper, water colour sets, fine brushes, pencils. Please bring along a text/poem from your favourite book, magazine.
Method and Activities: Memory and Improvised Drawing, Automatic Writing, Colouring Words/letters, Drawing with texts, Silence and sounds. Analogue and mutual perception, reciprocation. Inspiration. Mindful Body.
Outcomes: By physically and practically experimenting with signs and actions, the ‘contributors’ will gain insight to expanded horizons of perception accompanied by a renewed sense of empowerment in the process of daily significations.
Cost: £10 x person including materials
